Inger & Erik ... their brilliant research...
New Brain-New World presents cutting edge EEG brainmapping research regarding the Kundalini, the Chakras, Oneness Blessing Energy Transfer and Altered States of Consciousness. We have among other things studied several awakened (enlightened) persons and lately we have studied 12 persons using EEG brain-mapping before and after the 21-day Oneness Blessing process at Amma and Bhagavan's Golden City in Southern India.
This new brain is one of the answers to coming out from under the fundamental illusion of separation that the ANCIENT MIND has fostered for millennia. Along with a NEW BRAIN, the Oneness Blessing leads to the FLOWERING of the HEART helping us to unconditionally forgive and helping us to act compassionately toward ourself and so called "others".
An EEG brainmapping study of 12 participants in the 21-day process in Golden City in January 2006 was conducted by a research team consisting of:
- Erik Hoffmann, Research Director, New Brain-New World, Copenhagen
- Harald Kjellin, Professor, Stockholm University, Sweden
- Inger Spindler, Neurotherapist, New Brain-New World, Copenhagen
Quantative EEG and Brainmaps were made of the 12 participants before and after the process in order to document changes in their brain functions. They were also interviewed before and after the course. Here is a brief summary of the results:
We analyzed 26 EEG variables and only found statistically significant changes in a few of these after the process. A solid finding was a strong tendency for the two brain hemispheres to function more symmetrically following the process. This balancing of the left and the right brain was most pronounced in the posterior (occipital-parietal) areas where this tendency toward symmetry was found in 11 out of the 12 subjects. In technical terms, the right/left mean ratio of Alpha waves (8-12Hz) during baseline with eyes closed changed for the group mean from 1.18 to 1.04 where 1.00 is absolute symmetry between the hemispheres.
Another interesting finding was an increase of fast Gamma wave activity (25-42Hz) in the frontal lobes after the process. Since these measurements demanded some special equipment, we were only able to measure six out of the 12 subjects. However all six subjects showed substantial increases of Gamma activity in the prefrontal cortex. Actually the mean Gamma amplitudes increased from 10.5 to 15.8 microvolts with open eyes which is an increase of about 50%.
We believe that the changes we found following the 21-day process demonstrate improved brain functions. Better hemispheric symmetry reflects improved cooperation and communication between the right and the left brain, and the increased Gamma in the frontal area indicates an activation of what we call the 'New Brain' which is crucial for the awakening process and the oneness state.
With this small group of 12 people, we did not find any significant correlation between the scores from the questionnaire and the EEG data, except for one important variable. The two people who benefited the most from the 21-day process, according to the psychological evaluation, both had exceptionally high frontal Gamma levels. They were actually both considered to be in the awakened state.
The finding of increased Gamma in the frontal lobes seems to be very significant. Professor Richard Davidson, University of Wisconsin found in spiritually evolved Zen monks very high levels of Gamma activity in the frontal area. During deep meditation, on for example thankfulness, the Gamma level increased even further. Thus High Gamma levels, especially in the left prefrontal area of the brain seems to be the trade mark of enlightenment (see above figure).

From Maya's Nov 07 newsletter - Dr. Andrew Newberg, a well-known and respected neuro scientist was recently part of a group of VIPs that included Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu, Al Gore, a representative of the Dalai Lama, and many others, who met with Sri Amma and Sri Bhagavan at Oneness University in Fiji.
This amazing gathering was filmed, and is now being made into a documentary to be broadcasted around the world on mainstream television. Dr Newberg is researching and gathering scientific data showing the effects of oneness blessing on the brain, which will be included as part of the documentary.
Dr. Andrew Newberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and Psychiatry and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He is Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is the director and co-founder of the Center for Spirituality and the Neurosciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published many articles and books.

Watch Bhagavan talk about science and miracles:
Watch Bhagavan talk about the brain and gratitude:
Andrew Newberg, professor of nuclear medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, is author of the acclaimed book ‘Why God Won’t Go Away’. In an attempt to bridge science and spirit Newberg studied eight Tibetan Buddhist practitioners during meditation using SPECT scan. The images he captured showed that the brain’s prefrontal cortex during deep meditation lit up in a red color indicating an increase in blood flow and neural activity in that area. At the same time, surprisingly, the upper rear part of the brain called the parietal area turned a dark blue shade indicating a sudden drop of brain activity in that area which Newberg calls the Orientation Association Area (OAA).
Newberg theorizes that when the meditator withdraws from the outside world, sensory input to the OAA is blocked and the neural activity in that area is shut down. At the same time due to the intense concentration (on a mantra, on God or guru) the prefrontal cortex or the Attention Association Area (AAA) is strongly activated and will now assume the role as the brain’s new experiential center.
The OAA is the area which gives us the ability to orient ourselves in space and time and which gives our bodies a sense of physical limits and the self a sense of separateness from the rest of the universe. When the OAA is deactivated the physical limits of the body and the sense of separateness disappears. The brain can no longer create a boundary between self and the outside world, or locate itself in physical reality. As a result, Newberg says, the brain has no choice but to perceive that self as endless, interwoven with everyone and everything. This is the state Newberg calls Absolute Unitary Being. We prefer to call it the Oneness State.
Newberg’s research suggests that the process of awakening is not only due to psychological change or a change in philosophy and values. No, it is primarily due to a fundamental change in brain function with a shift in brain dominance from the parietal (OAA) to the prefrontal (AAA) area. When the over-activity in the OAA is decreased and the under-activity in the AAA is increased, there is a shift of the brain’s command center and the individual wakes up to a higher level of consciousness and to a new reality which seems to be even more real than the old one.
Richard Davidson. Some of Newberg’s findings have been corroborated by neuroscientist Richard Davidson, University of Wisconsin. Davidson collaborated with Tibet’s Dalai Lama who sent eight of his most accomplished meditators to Davidson’s laboratory for a scientific study.
Using both EEG and fMRI scans, Davidson studied the monks during deep meditation and found very high activity in the prefrontal cortex - especially on the left side which has to do with feelings of joy, happiness and compassion. The EEG recordings during deep meditation showed extremely powerful Gamma waves in that same area of the brain.
Since there were no detailed descriptions of the monks’ levels of spiritual development in the above studies we have no idea whether any of them were in a permanent awakened state.
